The admission test for ALP 2009-2010 — The Tenth Edition — in 2009 will take place on Friday, 15 May 2009, at 9:00 AM, Auditorium Room, Cracow, ul. Bracka 12. The rules will be to a large extent similar to those in 2008 (but the amounts of time might vary). We will ask the candidates to write an essay on a general topic that has to with law, society or politics. The second task will be a set of detailed questions on the collection of legal texts. We cordially invite JU-students, graduates, practicing lawyers, and other candidates to participate!
Please read the materials from 2008-2009: the Honor Code, the Handbook, and the Schedule – so that you have an idea about the Program. For ALP 2009-2010 rules will be similar.
We will announce the detailed rules and requirements for the exam not later than one month before the exam. Please note that you will need to sign up at this page for the for exam.
You will need to bring an ID document to the exam, and a black pen.
The 2007-2008 edition of the ALP-admission test.
In 2007, the topic of the essay was: “Discuss the possible benefits and risks for Poland, should the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe as signed in 2004 enter in force”. (time: 25 min.) From here you can download the 2007 texts and the questions (time for reading and taking notes was 40 min., and for answering: 25 min.). The texts had been taken away from candidates before they started answering. This year the test will be similar but might be more demanding as for the text+questions part.
Every candidate needs to take the admission test. TOEFL, Cambridge Certificates etc. will NOT provide exemption.
How to prepare?
Read British and American legal literature and court decisions. This blog has a collection of links that might make a good starting point. Write short, 30-min. essays on social, economical, political and legal issues which appear in everyday press. Focus on clear, comprehensive style, flawless grammar and spelling, rich and professional vocabulary.
As for additional materials, for example The New York Times is a useful learning device. It has a rich collection of articles, and one click on any word in text brings up its definition.
