The Translation Project

Posted by Filip Wejman on October 8, 2007

This project is about translating and publishing a collection of American judicial opinions.

Should you like to participate in the Translation project, place your name in the comment to this post. Next to your name, you can write: TRANSLATOR or MANAGER, depending on your preferred role. You can choose both. If you choose none, I assume you are interested only in translation.

This project is difficult and VERY demanding. It can last from 8 to over 20 months. Translation seems easy at first, but if we are talking about publishing the result, it is hundreds of hours of HARD work. At the same time, the result can be spectacular, and you will learn a lot.

One very important quality that we are looking for is diligence and patience. Translation from English into Polish that makes a good read, is a rare phenomenon, because the spirits of these languages are pretty different. Thus, another important feature of the candidates is talent for writing in Polish. I mean a talent for writing literature: novels, poems, short stories.

Probably you will not earn any money on this project, even if the text is published — the copyright will go to the university for free. (But probably the University will not make anything on it as well). The translators agree for that at the outset.

The management of the group might be quite some work: scanning, coping and distribution of materials, organizing meetings, putting pressure on people who are late etc. We might need to raise some small additional money for assistance as regards professional expertise in Polish language.
