The Games Project

Posted by Filip Wejman on October 8, 2007

The Games Project is an experiment by a group of ALP-students (‘players’ and ‘managers’).  It’s a tournament of poker, go, chess and backgammon.  The initial inspiration for the tournament comes from the administration of ALP but now the project is operated only by the students and for the students.  In 2007-2008  a small, trial version was organized in order to earn experience.  It has shown that this idea can fly.  In the Spring semester 2009, ALP might launch an expanded version if there is interest among the students.

Main Rules for the Tournament:

1. Players must participate in all four games.

2. The ranking of players is based on the sum of points earned in four disciplines.  The winner is the player who has the highest combined score.

3. Gambling is forbidden; poker-players are only allowed to use tokens with no financial value.

4. The idea of the tournament is not only competition but cooperation.  Most players have a verying degree of skills in different games, for example someone excelent in chess might not know at all how to play go.  In 2007-2008, there was a substantial amount of training and instruction exchanged among the students.
